The Royal Family of Cartas
The Royal Family of Cartas descends from King Altus Cerasus I, the first monarch of the Kingdom of Cartas. Although it has since changed to a Democratic Monarchy, the position still holds nearly absolute power and is still passed on through the bloodline of Altus Cerasus I.
Although the Royal Family is technically the Cerasus family, historians often divide the family into four lineages: the Cerasus lineage, which ended with King Altus Cerasus III, the Fortis lineage, direct descendants of Laurel Fortis and current claimants to the throne, the Klargas lineage, descended from Laurel Fortis’s sister Viola Fortis Klargas, and the Margrave lineage, descendants of King Altus Cerasus III’s younger brother Torval Cerasus. None of these lineages have favor over the others in determining order of succession, but the current Monarch’s siblings, then children, then aunts and uncles, then nieces and nephews gain first priority; after this, it is simply decided by date of birth.
The current monarch, Queen Gardenia Fortis, descends from the Fortis lineage; her brother, Narcissus, has abdicated his claim to the throne, making her direct successors her uncle, Aster, aunt, Camellia and her cousin, Iris.
